As you know, a number of parts must come together to ensure you fall asleep, and then stay asleep. For example, you need to be comfortable – a supportive pillow is a necessity, as is a comfortable bed and quiet sleeping area. You also want to be the right temperature.
Perhaps you try to achieve that by sticking one foot out of the blanket, while keeping the other one covered. These are all things that set the stage for getting the slumber you desire and need.
However, if you continually have trouble with your sleep, you may want to try something different – sleeping in the buff. According to a past survey, only 8% of Americans admit to sleeping naked. However, it appears to influence your health in so many positive ways, that experts recommend you give it a try.
Here are the health benefits of not wearing pajamas to bed:
1 – Being Naked Prevents Overheating
For sleep to occur at night, your body temperature needs to drop. It is easier to do this if you do not have clothing on, especially if you share a bed with your partner who radiates heat.
Pets sleeping nearby can also warm you up, making it more difficult to fall asleep. You do not want to be too warm, otherwise you will not stay asleep either.
Your body temperature begins to rise before it is time to wake up, and therefore sleeping naked can ensure that you do not wake up due to overheating from your pajamas worn.
2 – Your Hormones are Better Regulated
As just mentioned, when you sleep in the buff, you are less likely to wake up due to overheating. It is known that when you don’t get enough sleep, it messes with your appetite-suppressing and hunger hormones.
As a result, you eat more than you should, which puts you at increased risk of weight gain and diseases associated with obesity – diabetes, heart attack, cancer, etc.
However, when your body temperature is lower for sleep, your hormones can help you out. For example, cortisol (a stress hormone) is lower which is necessary for quality sleep. The cooler body temperature also helps with melatonin production – a sleep hormone released when it gets dark.
Also, when you are able to get restorative sleep, your body produces growth hormones, necessary for body structure. It is important to note that high cortisol levels at night can suppress growth hormone. So get naked and let your hormones work the way they are supposed to!
3 – You Will Be More Comfortable
When you are naked, you do not have to contend with clothing that bunches or feels too tight in areas. For women, it allows the vagina to “breathe”, reducing the risk of yeast infections which can occur from tight or warm underwear.
Men can also benefit by leaving the underwear off. Research shows an increase in sperm production and quality of sperm.
4 – You will Have a Better Sex Life
Sex is easier and more spontaneous when neither partner wears pajamas to bed. As well, sex before bed stimulates “feel-good” hormones that can make it easier to fall asleep afterwards. Regular sex with your partner also promotes enhanced mental health.
