Leading a healthy life doesn’t have to be complicated and you certainly don’t need to say goodbye to desserts either. The beauty of eating well is in finding new and innovative ways to satisfy your sweet tooth but in healthier ways.
Deprivation need not be your downfall, as there are hundreds of healthy dessert recipes online, and of course, you can always enjoy the basics like fruit. You don’t have to stop there, though, there is plenty of other ideas right here.
1 – Crushed Raspberry Cream
You don’t need to do any cooking here, and the preparation time is minimal. If you don’t love raspberries, you can try a different berry, but the tartness of the raspberry adds another layer of flavor to this treat. You’ll only need the fruit, caster sugar, meringue shells, light sour cream, and Greek yogurt.
Sprinkle (some of) the sugar in with the fruit and crush your berries as you do so. Fold the yogurt and sour cream together with the rest of the sugar and the meringue. Serve your raspberries and top with the creamy mixture. Simple, low fat, and delicious.
2 – Citrus Prosecco Jello
All you need is orange juice, prosecco (or any sparkling wine), and gelatin. It doesn’t sound fancy so choose nice individual serving dishes to allow them to set in. You may want to consider garnishing with a sprig of mint as well as a touch of gold leaf. This is a great one to serve guests and keep yourself on track with your healthy eating.
3 – Fruit Pudding
We often don’t give the British enough credit when it comes to desserts, but their fruit puddings are delicious and this one just happens to be low fat, too. You just need a bag of frozen fruit (which you will need to defrost before use), butter, breadcrumbs, jelly, pears, and muscovado sugar (https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1037/juicy-lucy-pudding).
It’s something different and it’s a great option for when you are entertaining guests. Those not worried about fat can add some ice cream and it’s so delicious you won’t feel left out when you can’t.
4 – Banana Berry Slush
This is probably the simplest recipe you will ever read – there are just two ingredients – bananas and berries. Yes, it’s that easy. Find two ripe bananas and buy frozen berries for this recipe. Toss them in the blender together and serve immediately.
5- Pineapple Sorbet
Caster sugar, one pineapple (large, peeled, cored, and diced), zest and juice of a lime, sliced fresh ginger (a small piece), and Thai basil leaves. You will need to prepare this one in advance so the flavors have time to develop. All of your ingredients go into the blender for a good blitz before being frozen in your dish overnight.
Before you are set to serve it, take it out of the freezer, and let it defrost just enough that it easily slides from your dish in one block.
Then chop your block into chunks (around the size of an ice cube) before throwing them in your blender to create a puree. Let your puree freeze for another hour and then scoop it into your preferred serving dishes. You can garnish it with some basil leaves and even top it with rum or vodka.
See, eating healthily doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to delicious desserts or any other treats. Not only are there plenty of new and interesting twists on the classics, but you can really do incredible things with frozen and fresh fruit.
You can even create your own new recipes by substituting ingredients for healthier ones in your own dessert favorites (think applesauce and avocado).
