22 Questions to Ask Yourself
- Am I 65 or older?
- Have I broken a bone from a simple fall or bump since age 40?
- Do I have a family history of bone disease
- Do I smoke?
- Do I regularly drink three or more alcoholic drinks per day?
- Do I take any other medication that can cause osteoporosis?
- Do I have a medical condition that can cause bone loss or fractures?
- Did I have late onset of sexual development
- Did I have an early menopause, i.e. before age 45?
- Have my periods ever stopped for several months or more (other than for pregnancy or menopause)?
- Do I currently have low body weight compared to an average person of my height and age?
- Have I lost more than 10% of my body weight since age 25 (or 1% per year in the elderly)?
- Have I recently had an X-ray that showed a back fracture or low mineral density?
- Do I suffer from anorexia nervosa or athletic amenorrhea syndrome?
- Am I being treated with drugs that affect bone metabolism (e.g., glucocorticoids such as prednisone?)
- Do I have a disease linked to secondary osteoporosis?
- Do I have high levels of serum calcium or alkaline phosphatases?
- Do I have hyperparathyroidism, hyperthyroidism, or am I being treated with high doses of thyroid hormone?
- Have I noticed height loss or progressive spinal curvature?
- Do I perform weight-bearing exercise such as walking, running, aerobics, dancing and team sports which strengthens bones less than 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week?
- Is my diet low in calcium and vitamin D?
- Is my diet high in salt or protein?
